CANYON, Texas - In addition to the fond memories they made in the minds of fans on their way to becoming the most successful West Texas A&M football team in school history, the 2007 Buffs have left a lasting impressions on the program's all-time record book. This year's football squad broke 20 school records during a spectacular fall which saw it collect a 12-1 overall record on the way to claiming a third straight Lone Star Conference Championship.

After a pair of LSC Championships and playoff appearances during his first two seasons at the helm of the WT football program, Don Carthel fielded one of the deepest and most talented teams this season. Despite a rash of injuries, which saw the seasons of no less than nine Buffs cut short for medical reasons, WT was able to roll through the regular season with a perfect 11-0 record, just the second perfect regular season slate in school history and the first since 1918, downing four nationally ranked opponents along the way.

In the post-season's first round, just as the season before, the Buffs needed a spectacular comeback to advance as they rallied from an 18-point second half deficit to down No. 25 Washburn at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. In addition to being the site of the historic playoff comeback, Kimbrough also became the site of the largest crowd to ever see an NCAA Division II football game, when 23,276 fans packed the Buff Bowl to watch WT remain in possession of the Wagon Wheel traveling trophy from border rival Eastern New Mexico.

For the third straight season, West Texas A&M ranked among the best programs in the nation in terms of attendance as 86,951 total fans saw the Buffs take the field, while WT ranked in the top three nationally during the regular season by average over 13,000 fans per contest.

In the national rankings, the Buffs climbed as high as fourth in both the American Football Coaches Association Poll and the D2football.com Top 25, marking the highest ranking for the program since the 1986 season when the team peaked at No. 2. West Texas A&M has been consistent under Carthel, appearing in the national rankings for 32 consecutive weeks dating back to October of 2005.

On the field it was the Buffs' high-powered offense which did much of the talking as WT led the nation in passing offense for the second time in three years by averaging 396.5 yards per game. Led by junior quarterback Keith Null, WT set school record in passes attempted, passes completed, net passing yards, touchdown passes, first downs, total yards and points. Individually, Null set program bests in single season passing yards (4,134) and touchdown passes (41) despite missing two games with an injury.

Fellow WT backfield member, redshirt freshman Keithon Flemming, became the first Buffalo running back to eclipse the 1,000 yard season rushing mark since DeWayne Miles in 2000 and etched his named in both the WT and NCAA record book as he raced 99 yards for a score during the Buffs win over Angelo State on Oct. 27.

Senior Jon Roberts was steady for the Buffs in the kicking game as the Houston, Texas, native set a WT record with most field goals in a season at 14 and most successful extra points with 53.

Defensively, junior defensive end Brandon Swain nabbed LSC Defensive Lineman of the Year honors as he collected 14 sacks on the season, falling just short of the single season record of 15.5 set by Franco Glaze in 1997.

The future looks promising for the Buffalo football team as it continues to build a championship level program with much of the core of this season's team along with many of its top individual performers return for next season and stand ready to write a new chapter in Buffalo football history.
